A How-To Guide on Dressing Uniquely

By Leah Hoffman

Like most girls on Miami University’s campus, I have a big bucket full of going-out tops, an overflowing mix of sparkly, leather and slinky pieces. It’s one of my prized possessions, but I had a serious grievance with at least half the clothes in there until now. I hated walking into the bars matching three other girls in the same cheetah top. Cute in girl code, but I wanted my own style, and now I want to help you find yours.

The best compliment I ever got was from a girl who said, “Leah, you always look so adorable and different,” then added, “I feel like I dress so basic.” It made me happy, but also a little sad that she felt this way about her own wardrobe. Your closet should reflect your personality and boost your confidence, not take it away. I know this firsthand. I used to be so self-conscious about what I wore, worrying if I stood out too much. I had funky pieces I loved but never thought I could pull off. One day, I started slowly adding those pieces into my outfits, and it gave me so much confidence. Over time, I stopped caring what others thought. Now I wear exactly what I want, and couldn’t care less who likes it.

The key to finding unique pieces is thrifting. You don’t need to spend a fortune to start your trendsetting journey. I picked it up as a hobby and quickly fell in love. Before, I felt like I had no style. Walking into regular stores, I was drawn to everything and felt overwhelmed. Thrifting changed that. I’m drawn to niche finds like Y2K pieces and unique accessories. The more I thrifted, the more I bought what I truly loved, not just what I felt I had to wear. I also think that in today's world of overconsumption, it’s important to choose more eco-friendly options. Following retail trends, I would tire of pieces in months and buy more, but I don’t think I’ve ever gotten bored with anything I’ve thrifted. Now that you know where to shop, let’s talk about how to thrift.

Follow three simple tips:

  • Trust your gut, if you love it, wear it.

  • Ignore the rules; trends fade, but personal style lasts.

  • Don’t be afraid to customize a piece to make it truly yours.

I hope this guide helps you dress uniquely and become a trendsetter.
