With the limited spare time I have while at school, I have made it my mission to try and pick up as many new hobbies as possible.

During college, I’ve started dabbling in embroidery, sewing, scrapbooking, bracelet making, crafting and more. It makes me feel better about myself than doomscrolling – at least this way I’m accomplishing something rather than lying in bed all day, which I’ve definitely been guilty of before.

Embroidery has been my most recent endeavor, and I’m definitely just getting started. However, I ordered an embroidery starter kit online and tried the first template. I got frustrated pretty quickly and felt like I was wasting my time, so instead of teaching myself how to do it properly, I grabbed a denim jacket out of my closet and embroidered stars into the sleeve cuffs.

Scrapbooking is another thing I picked up during college. Now, wherever I go, I pick up flyers I see and cut them up into pieces for my scrapbook, hold onto movie tickets and reuse tags instead of letting them go into the landfill. It helps fuel my creativity while also preventing things from becoming trash.

As someone who did theater all throughout middle and high school, I have a bunch of old theater t-shirts that I haven’t worn in years. Instead of letting them collect dust in my closet, I decided to turn them into a blanket. I had literally no idea what I was doing and had never sewn prior to this in my life; however, I did a quick Google search, bought a needle and thread and got to work. It’s not quite finished yet, but so far, I’m happy with the results, and obsessed with the fact that I can turn something that was such a big part of my life into a blanket I can keep forever.

I also love making cards or bracelets for my friends or favorite performers. It’s easy to do, but everyone is always incredibly grateful and it’s enough to put a smile on someone else’s face. Plus, it’s fun to do.

Before I started college, I didn’t really have any of these hobbies or interests. I was incredibly busy with extracurricular activities outside of school, so I didn’t have time to do these things. However, since starting college, I have forced myself to make time to do fun, creative things, and I am so grateful I did.

If you can set aside some time for yourself to pick up a new hobby or try something creative, do it. It’s so rewarding to be able to say you made something, and it’s a much better use of your time than doomscrolling all night. Let yourself be creative and try new things.
