Whether you are dressing for a function or dressing for fun, dressing in a way that makes you feel good about yourself is important. There’s a reason the phrase “look good, feel good” is repeated so frequently.

There is psychology behind wearing clothing that we like. Clothing that we perceive to be flattering and good-looking can boost our mood, self-esteem and confidence. When you have a positive perception of yourself, you are more likely to be motivated and have positive social interactions. You may even experience a dopamine release. Often, our personal grooming and outward appearance reflect our inner thoughts and feelings as well. By ensuring that you put time and effort into your appearance and clothing, you are investing in valuable self-care that will ultimately have a positive effect on your mental health.

So, how do you know what to wear to bring more joy into your wardrobe?

Always remember that clothing is meant to fit you; you are not meant to fit into clothing. Investing in clothing that fits you well makes a huge difference in how you wear any piece. It is also important to remember that you are the one wearing the outfit, not other people. It can be intimidating to branch out from popular trends, but finding your own style is far more rewarding than blindly following what is popping up on your Instagram feed.

One easy way to figure out the pieces that make you feel your best is to keep a photo diary of what you wear when you feel your best. After a few weeks, it’s likely you will begin to notice patterns in what you often reach for when you want to feel your best. Investing in similar pieces or building an outfit around your favorite item is a great way to feel your best every day.

If you are looking to branch out, including more colors such as blue, yellow or pink is an easy way to boost any outfit.

Fun patterns, textures and cuts are also ways to make your outfit more uniquely yours and introduce playful elements. Adding accessories, such as jewelry and shoes, is also an easy way to add more interesting aspects to a look.

I like to think that there is no such thing as a special occasion—every day is a special occasion. Dressing in a way that brings me joy, no matter what I am doing, is a privilege, and it has truly helped me feel more gratitude and confidence every day. Dressing for joy is an easy way to take care of yourself, and so incredibly worth it.
