How to Escape Oxford (for the Day)

The hustle and bustle of Miami University life can be overwhelming at times. Simultaneously, sometimes nothing in Oxford seems entertaining. Whenever you are feeling stuck in town, perhaps plan a small day trip for a change of scenery.

Here are six day trips less than a three-hour drive from Oxford:
Cincinnati
Drive Time: one hour
Activities:
USS Nightmare Haunted Boat Tour
A haunted boat experience each September through November.
Technically located across the border, in Newport, Kentucky.
General Admission and parking are free.
Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens
See Fiona the Hippo!
Open Thursday through Sunday, with more than 50 full-time merchants.
Restaurants
A Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant.
A bakery that rotates items seasonally. Bakery items vary from cookies to croissants to cinnamon buns.

Columbus

Activities:
Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
A garden full of exotic plants, special exhibitions and Dale Chihuly artworks.
Center of Science and Industry (COSI)
A dynamic hands-on science center and museum.
A performing arts facility that has been entertaining audiences since 1928, with events ranging from theatre shows to concerts.
Offers both a zoo and aquarium experience, and various events throughout the year.

A craft brewery and pub that serves an elevated pub food, including burgers, tacos and snacks.
A fast and casual Mediterranean restaurant that offers build-your-own sandwiches, bowls, and salads

Indianapolis
Drive Time: two hours
Activities:
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum
An automotive museum on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Features art galleries, lush gardens, two historic homes, a nature preserve and a sculpture park.
The Canal Walk is part of the Indiana Central Canal, which was dug in the early 1800s.
The literary, artistic, and cultural contributions of the late writer, artist and Indianapolis native Kurt Vonnegut.

Fort Wayne, Indiana

Varying Performances - Twilight in Concert, the Music of Hans Zimmerman, the Nutcracker, etc.
A beautiful park with a sunken garden.
Within the University of Saint Francis.
Guided one-hour tours are offered January through October.

Louisville, Kentucky

Exhibits, events, and programs all about Ali and his legacy.
A housing district in Old Louisville, where beautiful old mansions are located.
A stunning and historical cemetery open for exploring.
Watch a horse race at the historical and famous Kentucky Derby track.
A Victorian-style house, constructed in 1895, that has been converted into a museum.

Located near the iconic Keeneland Racetrack, where you can experience a farm known for raising and selling first-class thoroughbred horses.
The world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house. They host racing twice annually.
