Sincerely, Sara: How to Bundle Up This Winter

Dear Students,

As the temperatures continue to drop, it is important to remember how to dress warmly. I often find myself not wanting to go to class because of the frigid temperatures outside. It is obviously important to go to class, that's why we are here, but sometimes it is hard to roll out of bed in the morning, especially when it's cold and dark. Staying warm can make a big difference in comfort and motivation. Here are some simple and effective ways to stay warm.

One of the best ways to stay warm is by layering. Instead of wearing one thick sweatshirt or sweater, wearing several lighter layers will keep you warmer. Wearing a thermal shirt, a sweatshirt and a winter coat will ultimately keep you warmer than wearing a sweatshirt and a coat. It also gives you the option to take layers off, especially in warm buildings, so you don't overheat. It is also important to have a good winter coat that will keep you warm. It really does not matter what brand it is, as long as it keeps you protected from the cold.

It's also important to keep your hands, feet, face, head, neck, etc., warm so your body can stay protected from the cold. My personal favorite form of “winter gear” is scarves. Scarves are such versatile pieces that can keep different parts of your upper body warm. Personally, I wrap my scarf as a Balaclava, which then covers my head, face and ears, keeping me warm. People are also big fans of beanies and earmuffs to keep their ears and head warm. In order to keep your hands warm, gloves are the way to go. A lot of people do not like to wear gloves because they can be inconvenient. Invest in a pair of gloves that are comfortable and cute; this will make you actually want to wear gloves and keep your hands warm.

There are a lot of options for footwear to keep your toes safe from frostbite. Starting with your socks, I always love a good pair of fuzzy socks; they are usually cute and keep your feet nice and warm. Wool socks are also another good option if you want to draw less attention to your feet. In terms of shoes, it is important to have a good pair of winter boots. Not only will these boots be waterproof and keep your feet warm, but they also have good traction when you are walking around campus. I also love UGGs or even FUGGS (“fake UGGs”), but these seem to be a better choice if it isn't snowy and you aren't walking very far.

In the end, dressing warmly in the winter makes cold days a little more bearable. By layering your clothes and protecting your hands, head and feet, you can be more comfortable and motivated to get through the day. I suggest trying one of these tips next time you walk to class–it’s better to bundle up than be cold.

Sincerely,

Sara
