Shows You Need to Watch as a Girl in Her 20s

By Sophie Masi

Any girl in her 20s knows that downtime is essential. There needs to be a balance in life, and sometimes rotting on the couch and binging a full season of your favorite show is just what you need. But what makes TV shows so good sometimes is the relatability that comes with them. So here are some shows I believe are mandatory to watch at some point as a girl in your 20s.

Sex and the City

I know it’s ironic starting out with a show about women in their 30s, but let me explain. Sex and the City is not just a show but a lifestyle, a mindset, and a downright how-to and what-not-to-do guide for your future. Not only is it a masterpiece of storytelling when it comes to the importance of friendship and female relationships in a woman’s life, but it also offers countless insights on navigating romantic relationships. It gives you a sense of comfort knowing that if you feel like you don’t have your life together in your 20s, you don’t have to—you don’t have to have your life together in your 30s either. You’ll be fine, and you aren’t alone. Besides being one of the most real and entertaining shows ever, the amount of life lessons within the show is actually valuable. Plus, every girl should know if she’s a Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte or Samantha.

Girls

Another show about girls navigating their lives post-college, Girls follows twenty-somethings living in New York City. We watch as they try to figure out who they are and what they really want from life. Going through messy drama and bad breakups, we witness hilarious, embarrassing moments that are somehow still gratifying and empowering. The different personalities of the characters shine through, and they really are like no other on television. Finding solace in the fact that nobody knows who they are post-grad helps when you're freaking out about entering your mid-20s.

Tell Me Lies

If you’re looking for something set in college and a little more in correlation with your day-to-day life as a college student, Tell Me Lies is one of the most thrilling college-set TV series I’ve watched. With a bit of mystery, the show takes place at a college in upstate New York and focuses on a freshman girl who gets involved with a junior on campus. Unforeseen events unfold, and the plot takes crazy twists and turns as we occasionally flash forward to a post-grad storyline about their friend group reuniting at a wedding. What happened in college to make this wedding so dramatic and high-stakes? Do not underestimate the grip that this all-too-real toxic college situationship will have on you.

Sex Lives of College Girls

Want something a little less heavy but still relatable to your college life? The Sex Lives of College Girls is the perfect comedy that mixes in heartwarming moments and true friendship to make a comforting show you can watch in peace. It follows a group of four roommates who come to college and learn not only about themselves—exploring their sexuality and figuring out who they want to be—but also about friendship and relationships, all while living together and dealing with the everyday issues college students face.

Friends

Finally, it’s a bit of a cliché, but a little throwback that screams comfort show is Friends. Thinking about watching that show as a child and growing up seeing it on the TV from time to time—or doing full-on 10-season rewatches—it’s crazy to realize that they were in their 20s at the beginning of the series. Starting as 25-year-old characters trying to find their place in the world, either by detaching from their parents or finding a career they’re truly passionate about, Friends is so much more relatable than you might have once thought. It’s a little utopian, given they were in their mid-20s, living in large apartments with amazing clothes while being in between jobs, waitressing or working part time as actors—but it was the ’90s. And sometimes, that little unrealistic fantasy is exactly the comfort you need.
