The most consistent thing in this world may be change. We are all familiar with it, having experienced and endured it in our everyday lives. The chaos of unpredictability can cause high levels of stress, depression and anxiety. That is why I, along with many others, believe that maintaining a reliable routine can help preserve a healthy mindset.
Grounding ourselves in a few daily patterns creates structure in a fast-paced, volatile world. It provides a sense of reassurance to lean on when anxiety is high and we are searching for something within our control. As the National Institute of Mental Health reminds us, small acts of self-care can improve both physical and mental health, leading to greater regulation of stress, productivity and energy. This doesn’t have to mean perfection, nor mirroring the life of your favorite “wellness” influencer, but rather finding simple acts of self-love every day that can lead to a more fulfilling life.
As someone who experiences the struggle of anxiety, I have found that having a simple, everyday routine has proved to be the most critical aspect of maintaining my mental health. Waking up at a consistent time, spending a few minutes in gratitude and reflection and incorporating some physical activity are all non-negotiable parts of my morning. Building new habits may feel intimidating, but the best thing you can do for yourself is start small and start today. Whether it’s taking a morning walk, trying a short meditation or finding a new, reliable form of exercise, starting now will turn intentional actions into meaningful habits.
So, as you move forward in your week and the chaotic holiday season, I invite you to set intentions, celebrate your wins and take pride in the fact that you are making actionable steps toward a less stressful life.
