The crisp air is a sure sign that fall has definitely arrived in Oxford! If you are like me, you have been counting down the days to fall, dreaming of soups, cider and “Gilmore Girls.” My favorite part of the season, though, is watching all of my favorite fall movies.
Here is a list of some of the best fall movies to watch this year.
“Practical Magic”
The 1998 film, directed by Griffin Dunne and based on the 1995 novel with the same name, is the epitome of fall. The movie is set in a charming small town in Massachusetts, focused on the Owens sisters, played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who come from a long line of witches. Raised by their eccentric aunts in a stunning Victorian home, the sisters navigate love, loss and the legacy of a family curse that dooms any man they fall in love with. This story is set to a superb soundtrack filled with Stevie Nicks' best performances. I watched this film for the first time last fall and have been in love ever since.
“When Harry Met Sally”
The 1989 film directed by Rob Reiner has long been revered as one of the best romance movies of all time. While many would not consider this movie a “fall movie,” a large part of the film takes place in the fall of New York City, and the costumes epitomize fall fashion. The film follows Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) in their decade-long will-they-won't-they relationship.
“Nancy Drew”
This 2007 movie, directed by Andrew Fleming, takes a twist on the classic book trilogy of the same name. Starring Emma Roberts as Nancy Drew, the film seamlessly blends traditional sleuthing with contemporary teen life, showcasing Nancy's old-fashioned manners and detective skills in contrast to the modern world. In this adaptation, Nancy moves to Los Angeles with her father and ends up unraveling the mystery behind the long-unsolved murder of a famous Hollywood actress, Dehlia Draycott. This movie is not traditionally associated with a fall watch, but I put it on this list to add a lighthearted twist if you want to watch a mystery movie.

“Halloween Town”
The Disney Channel Original Movie from 1998, “Halloweentown,” is a nostalgic favorite of mine that I rewatch every fall. Starring Debbie Reynolds as the lovable grandmother and witch Aggie Cromwell, the film follows Marnie Piper as she discovers her magical heritage and helps save a hidden world of monsters and magic. It's a mix of whimsical Halloween vibes and coming-of-age magic, which makes it a must-watch every fall.
“The Devil Wears Prada”
“The Devil Wears Prada” is an iconic 2006 fashion film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. The movie follows Andy Sachs, a young journalist who lands a job as the assistant to the powerful and intimidating fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Based on Anna Wintour at Vogue). This film is packed with sharp wit, glamorous fall fashion and a glimpse behind the scenes of the fashion industry. The film explores themes of ambition, identity and the cost of success. It is in the process of filming the highly anticipated sequel, premiering spring of 2026.
“Twilight”
“Twilight” is a 2008 film adaptation of the bestselling novel series by Stephenie Meyer. The story follows Bella Swan, a teenage girl who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington, and finds herself drawn to the mysterious and alluring vampire Edward Cullen. The film blends romance, supernatural elements and coming-of-age drama. It is the perfect movie to watch in the fall because of its moody, misty atmosphere and themes of change and discovery, which fit the season perfectly.
“Mona Lisa Smiles”
“Mona Lisa Smiles” is a 2003 drama starring Julia Roberts as an unconventional art history professor who challenges the traditional roles and expectations of women at a conservative all-female college in the 1950s. The movie explores themes of feminism, self-discovery and societal pressures. “Mona Lisa Smiles” is a great movie for fall because its reflective and introspective tone pairs perfectly with the season’s mood of change and self-discovery. Plus, its warm autumnal settings and cozy indoor scenes create a comforting atmosphere that’s ideal for crisp fall evenings.
“Clue”
“Clue” is a 1985 cult classic mystery comedy based on the popular board game. The film follows six colorful guests invited to a mysterious mansion, where they become suspects in a series of murders. As the night unfolds, alliances shift, secrets are revealed and everyone tries to solve the mystery before the killer strikes again. The film is known for its sharp slapstick humor and clever twists. Clue stands out with its unique gimmick of multiple endings, which keeps the audience guessing until the very last scene. Its blend of suspense and comedy makes it a perfect watch for fall evenings.
“Hocus Pocus”
“Hocus Pocus” is a beloved 1993 Halloween comedy that has become a seasonal classic. The film follows the Sanderson sisters (played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) who are accidentally resurrected by a group of kids on Halloween night into modern-day Salem, Massachusetts. Hocus Pocus perfectly captures the playful and magical spirit of Halloween.
“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”
“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” is a classic elementary school fall watch. This beloved 1966 animated special follows Linus as he waits faithfully for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin on Halloween night, while Charlie Brown and the gang navigate the ups and downs of trick-or-treating and Halloween parties. Its nostalgic charm and heartfelt messages about hope and belief make it a timeless favorite for kids and adults alike during the autumn season.
